Inspired by the wonderful creatures in a Bend, Oregon bear shop several years ago, I began a learning journey, exploring many styles and materials. My Graphic Arts Degree skills, intensive research and experimentation with new patterns, and talking with as many artists as possible have all allowed me to develop a sense of style all my own.

I started using patterns in classes. As I have learned more, I now design my own patterns and many of the accessories. I like to create a series rather than editions of bears, since each bear takes on his or her own personality. Sometimes gender or even species will change during the creative process. Many times a loved one or memory will inspire a new creation.

I love the look and feel of many fabrics. The textures will help suggest a bear or other friend I want to create. I have found that mohair and alpaca fur are my favorite materials to work with. Vintage leathers, old shoe buttons and hand blown glass eyes provide unique and defining details. Used furs, ultra suede and cashmeres are exciting finds at retail shops. I have made bears from karakul, beaver, mink, and wools. This is a meaningful way to preserve an heirloom or recycle an otherwise unloved piece.

I have studied with Steve Schutt, Pat Fairbanks and Linda Johnson as well as various local artists. All have been very eager to share their bear world knowledge.
